U.S. Housing Challenges for Seniors Aging in Place

U.S. Housing Challenges for Seniors Aging in Place

Are we prepared for the rising number of seniors choosing to age in place? The answer is a resounding no. There is a significant gap between perception and reality when it comes to homes being ready for older adults.

Survey by U.S. Census Bureau

A recent survey by the U.S. Census Bureau focused on housing among older adults. While a lot of attention goes to millennial and Gen Z buyers facing a tough housing market, it’s crucial to address the needs of older adults as well.

Key Findings

  • Over 37 million adult households in the U.S. include seniors.
  • 11% of these households struggle with current living conditions.
  • This number rises to 24% for the oldest adults.

Regional Differences

The report titled “Aging-Ready Homes in the United States: Perception vs. Reality of Aging Accessibility Needs” found that home accessibility varied by region:

  • South Atlantic areas reported higher difficulty compared to the national average.
  • New England and Northwest Central areas reported fewer difficulties.

Discrepancy in Homeowner Perceptions

Many homeowners believe their homes are fit for aging in place. However, they often lack essential features like step-free entryways or a bedroom with a full bathroom on the first floor, which are crucial to minimizing falls.

Need for Home Upgrades

Older adults often face financial barriers in upgrading their homes, especially in regions with older housing stock requiring extensive renovations like the Northeast.

Given the rising numbers and the significant risks of fall-related injuries, it is vital to consider the ability of older adults to age safely and comfortably in their homes over the coming decades.
