Lawrence E. Merlin is a commercial real estate attorney who has been in private practice since 1985. Larry graduated from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania (B.S., 1981) and Boston University School of Law (J.D., 1985). Larry began his legal career at the New York firm of White & Case where he represented such lenders as Swiss Bank Corporation, Deutsche Bank and Bankers Trust in complex cross-collateralized, multi-state mortgage loans. In 1988, Larry joined the Hartford firm of Pepe & Hazard where he closed mortgage and asset-based loans for The Connecticut Bank and Trust Co., Connecticut National Bank and Aetna Life Insurance Company. From 1992 to 2005, Larry represented one of the largest retail, hotel and multi-family developers in the Northeast, where he was responsible for negotiating and closing secured and unsecured loans, including 50+ securitized loans with Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, Prudential and Bank of America. From 2005 to 2007, Larry was a partner at the West Hartford firm of Kroll, McNamara, Evans & Delehanty, LLP where he represented Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Citigroup in their CMBS and transitional mortgage loan programs. Since 2008, Larry has pursued his own practice representing private REITS and other institutional clients in a variety of commercial real estate transactions.
