THE SADISTIC SURGEON RIDDLE: Before undergoing open-heart surgery, your sadistic surgeon comes in and gives you twelve (12) identical looking pills. One (1) of the pills will put you to sleep during the operation, the other eleven (11) pills will not. Also, any of the eleven (11) placebo pills will neutralize the sleeping pill, so take multiple pills will not help. The only other difference between the sleeping pill and the placebo pills is that the sleeping pill weighs either more or less than the other pills. The sinister surgeon, being a sport, gives you a set of balance scales on which to weigh the pills against each other to determine which one is the sleeping pill. However, the scales will not work without being fed a quarter and the diabolical surgeon only gives you three (3) quarters. You have no other money and the twisted surgeon will not tell you whether the sleeping pill is heavier or lighter than the placebos (no matter how much you beg). Can you categorically find the sleeping pill with only three (3) weighs of the balance type scale?
